Effectiveness of the detection of pests in pollen loads by sieving with the use of laboratory screens

A hundred mites of known species and developmental stages were introduced into a 20 g sample of pollen loads free of mites. The samples were sieved using 0.6 mm to 2 mm meshes in diameter to obtain a fine fraction of pollen and the number of mites was counted under the microscope and the efficacy of the method was evaluated. Obtained results indicated that the method examined varied with regard to the species involved and the developmental stages of mites. The highest efficacy of the method (50.8-97.0 percent) was achieved in the case of large and deeply sclerotised individuals (nymphs and imagines: Acarus siro, Carpoglyphus lactis, Glycyphagus domesticus and Varroa jacobsoni females); the detection of mites at early developmental stages (eggs, larvae) was the most difficult (7.0 to 24.2 percent)
