Use of constructed wetlands may provide a realistic and inexpensive solution for wastewater treatment in small communities, recreation sites and rural areas below 1000 inhabitants. In general, simple constructed wetlands can meet requirements regarding removal of organic substances removal from domestic sewage, but the removal of both nitrogen and phosphorus is usually insufficient. This led to the development of more elaborated facilities. An overview of such methods is presented as well as principles on which constructed wetlands are based. Principles of design and usage of natural wetlands as well as plants-water and plants-soil systems are given in the paper
