[Abundance of Cd and Pb in the A horizon of the Romanian soils]

The maps (1:3,000,000 scale) of Cd and Pb abundance as well as the maps of loading or pollution with Cd and Pb have been prepared. The Surfer software has been used. The mean contents of Cd and Pb, evaluated at the country's level according to the geometric mean values of 1,112 analysed soil samples, is 1.11 ppm and 31.0 ppm, respectively. According to the maximum allowable limits proposed by Kloke (1980), the proportion of Romanian soils polluted with Cd and Pb is about 5 per cent and 1 per cent, respectively. On the whole, the soils in the Moldavian Plateau, Dobrudja Plateau, Oriental and Meridional Carpathians and Subcarpathians have lower Cd contents as compared with soils in the Western Carpathians, Transylvania Depression, Getic Plateau and the Romanian Plain. The Pb abundance is higher in soils of the Oriental Carpathians, Dobrudja Plateau, Banato-Crishana Plain as compared with the soils in the Getic Subcarpathians, Getic Plateau, Moldavian Plateau and the Romanian Plain. The significance of differences between the maximum and minimum values recorded within the series of values separated according to the distinct natural characteristics increases in the following order: relief form, soil class, and soil type.
