In 17 pigs the influence of 1.5% calcium formate added to the diet was observed on feed utilization, biochemical markers in the blood, and fermentation and microbial settlement into the large intestine. Calcium formate positively influenced average daily weight gain (+10%) and decreased feed consumption by ca. 8%. There were no significant differences among the groups in the biochemical markers (urea, total protein, total lipids, glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol). Regarding mineral metabolism, higher levels of calcium in the blood (2.85-3.00 micromol/l) were registered in the experimental groups than in the control (2.36-2.42 micromol/l). Higher amounts of VFA were found in the control (149.5-178.5 micromol/g) than the experimental (126.63-157.0 micromol/g) group. Similarly the amount of enterococcies, lactobacillus and E. coli were higher in the control
