Two trials were carried out to study the effects of long-term intensive fertilization, alternating high and low nitrogen rates, on coverage, reduction in a number of plant species, dry matter yield and some quality parameters of permanent grasslands. The alternate intensity of fertilization was found to moderately suppress thinning of grass stand as well as the reduction in a number of plant species. There was no significant decrease in yields of the grasslands with different nitrogen rates in comparison to those using high amounts of nitrogen every year. However, the fertilization efficiency was significantly higher when the alternate nitrogen regime was applied. With the alternate regime, the crude protein content, or PDI was observed to be higher or equal in comparison to intensive fertilization yearly. Also, the alternation of rates of nitrogen had a good influence on the fibre content in grasses, which is advantageous
