Growth characteristics of vetiver grass Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash as affected by domestic wastewater of Changwat Phetchaburi

Field experiments were conducted to determine the growth characteristics of five vetiver cultivars:- India, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Ratchaburi, as affected by domestic wastewater from Changwat Phetchaburi. India vetiver cultivar gave the maximum shoot biomass, however the root biomass of Sri Lanka cultivar was the highest as compared to the other cultivars. Ratchaburi vetiver cultivar was to be highly increased the storage of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in the shoot, whereas the maximum storage of N and Mg in the root was obtained in Brazil cultivar, P, K and Ca in the Indonesia, Ratchaburi and Sri Lanka cultivars respectively. The uptake of Pb, Cd was the highest in the shoot of Ratchaburi cultivar and the highly uptake of Hg was found in Indonesia cultivar. In the root, the accumulation increment of these heavy metals, Pb, Cd and Hg was obtained from Sri Lanka, Ratchaburi and Indonesia cultivars respectively. The uptake of Cd and Pb in the shoot was higher than in the root. Thus, this experiment indicated the possibility of vetiver grass to be used as biological wastewater treatment.
