Responses of sugarcane cultivars after sugar induction by glyphosate

Effect of glyphosate application on induction of sugar content was investigated in 6 sugarcane cultivars, viz. F. 140, U-thong 1, E-hiew, K. 84-200, K.U. 50 and Vesta at Kasetsart University Kamphaeng Saen Campus, Nakhon Pathom Province. Glyphosate was applied at 80 g ae./rai to 7 1/2 month cane to compare with the control plot. The experiment was conducted from January 1993 to January 1994. The results revealed growth response to glyphosate from 7 to 12 months that the average plant heights of F. 140, E-hiew, K. 84-200, K.U. 50 and Vesta were significantly reduced. The number of tillers per stool decreased in F. 140, E-hiew and K. 84-200 while U-thong 1 reflected in the opposite direction. Analysis of stalks sampled every two weeks until harvesting at 12 months revealed reduction in average number of internodes per stalk and stalk weight, in all cultivars except Vesta., while reduction in stalk diameter was only found in E-hiew. Response to sugar quality was also prominent, as U-thong 1, E-hiew, K. 84-200, K.U. 50 and Vesta responsed positively in terms brix, pol, CCS and purity, but not fiber. F. 140 did not response to glyphosate in sugar quality but increased in fiber content. The suitable harvesting time after glyphosate application on 7 1/2 months old cane, as decided from CCS value at harvest, was between 4 to 8 weeks after applications. The treatment enhanced maturity of cane, depending on cultivars.
