Combining ability among lines of tropical and temperate corn (Zea mays L.)
1996
Terdsak Suwanatape
Four different groups of corn inbred lines with different genetic background were used in this study. They were : 1) Lines developed in Thailand from tropical sources (Tropical lines) ; 2) Lines developed by crossing Thai lines with exotic tropical lines introduced from Mexico and Brazil (Trop x Trop lines) ; 3) Lines developed by crossing Thai lines with exotic temperate sources from US (Trop x Temp lines) ; 4) Lines developed as No.3 with one backcrossing to tropical background (Trop x Temp BC1 lines). Partial diallel of 10 lines had been employed within each group resulted in 45 crosses of different combinations plus four check hybrids in each group with triple lattice design planted at two locations; Tak and Saraburi, during July 1992-October 1993. This study showed that the group of Tropical lines gave the highest yield (1,358 kg/rai) of a single cross hybrid followed by Trop x Trop lines, Trop x Temp lines and Trop x Temp BC1 lines; respectively. CSL1 and CSL9 showed the highest SCA of 149.3 and 124.0 kg/rai; respectively. Single cross of these two lines resulted in highest yield of 1,920 kg/rai with SCA of 414.8 kg/rai. Ranking of downy mildew reaction from resistant to susceptible lines were as followed; Tropical lines, Trop x Temp BC1 lines, Trop x Trop lines and Trop x Temp lines. The study indicated that under tropical environment the most useful source of genetic materials which lines were developed was the tropical genetic materials.
