This reported here is a sumary of research work done in soil microbiology from 1989-1990 under Department of Agriculture a4 the Agricultural Development Research Center in Northeast. Soils in the Northeast are relatively poor, especially low in N and P thus the objective of this study was aimed the utilizing nitrogen fixing microorganisms and phosphate solubilizing fungi to improve the fertility level of soil. The areas of research were rhizobia, associative nitrogen fixing bacteria, cyanobacteria Azolla and mycorrhiza. The results from rhizobium projects research indicated that yield of legume could be increased by using rhizobia. Associative nitrogen fixing bacteria with proper rate of nitrogen fertilizer could enhance growth and yield of rice in pot experiment. Azolla has been proved to be substitute for chemical nitrogen fertilizer for rice production. Rice-Azolla-fish system was shown in this study that rice yield and fish yield could be increased resulted in higher income was obtained. The application of mycorrhizal fungi has been shown to improve soil P availability. A major constrain to use the mycorrhizal fungi is in adequate spore inoculum under field condition. Soil treated with solarization could enhance spore production and the host for producing mycorrhiza inoculum are sorghum, corn and soybean.
