Study on the efficacy of herbicides to yield and quality of flue- cured tobacco

Efficacy of herbicides in weed control in flue-cured tobacco field was evaluated from October 1992 to February 1993 at Mae Jo Tobacco Experiment Station, Chiang Mai. The trial were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Four herbicides: Pantera-D, Ronstar 25 EC, Stomp 330 E and Enide 50 W at the concentrations of 60 ml, 60 ml, 120 ml and 120 g per 20 liters of water, respectively were compared with weed manual cultivation (control). All of the treatments were not significantly different in terms of their effects on yield of fresh and cured leaves, crop value, cured leaf grades and chemical components of cured leaves. Using herbicides in tobacco field could reduce the frequency of cultivating and weeding by about 50 percent from control. Twenty seven species of weed were found in the experimental area before the last ploughing of the land. After herbicide application, the number of weed species decreased to nine and there was no phytotoxicity on any tobacco plants. Over the area cultivated Ronstar 25 EC was about 80 percent active against grasses and broadleaved weeds Pantera-D was about 60-80 percent directly toxic to grasses, while Enide 50 W and Stomp 330 E were both active against pre-emergence weed seeds about 80 percent. Chemical analysis of the cured leaves was revealed that the levels of nicotine were 1.33-1.82 percent while those of reducing sugars were 24.53-27.32 percent.
