Hybrid corn development: S2 lines evaluation for combining ability
1994
Pichet Grudloyma | Sukapong Wayuphap | Pornsak Duangputan (Nakhon Sawan Field Crops Research Center (Thailand))
70 S2-line were topcrossed with two broad genetic base populations; namely SW1(MMS)C4 and Population 28(HS)C6. The topcross progenies were arranged in 12*12 simple lattice design with two replications. Each plot consisted of one row/plot of 6.5 meter long. The experiment was conducted in four locations; namely Nakhon Sawan Field Crops Research Center (NSW FCRC), Phraputthabat Field Crops Experiment Station (PPB FCES), Phetchabun Field Crops Experiment Station (PBN FCES) and National Corn and Sorghum Research Center (SW) in rainy season 1990. An individual analysis of variance showed highly significant difference among the varieties. Mean grain yield across locations ranged from 779 to 1051 kg/rai. In consideration of topcrosses performance and the downy mildew infection of S2-line, the eight of seventy S2-line were selected and generated to be S3-line. The yields of selected topcrosses with SW1(MMS)C4 ranged from 878 to 1006 kg/rai, meanwhile the yields of selected topcrosses with Pop 28(HS)C6 ranged from 876 to 1005 kg/rai. These lines showed the downy mildew infection ranged from 13.04 to 69.05 percent.
