Changes of glycosaminoglycans after unilateral sensorimotor cortex ablation in neonatal rats

The effects of unilateral (left) sensorimotor cortex lesion of infant rat brain (3-day-old) on the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) were studied. After unilateral cortical ablation a prolonged high level of total GAGs was observed. The percentage of distribution of hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin sulphate-(A+C), as the major components of extracellular matrix (ECM), was increased during the first and the second week after cortical lesion. During the same period heparan sulphate (HS), a membrane GAG, was decreasing to reach the control level at 21st day of age. High level of total GAGs, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate-(A+C), the GAGs which may contribute to establish a complete set of guidance cues necessary for the specific development of defined axon tracts in central nervous system, indicates that the recovery process in neonatal rat brain occurs not only by neurite outgrowth and collateral sprouting, but also remodeling of connections from other brain regions.
