The biological features of the autochthonous varieties of apples from the region of Kosovo and Metohia [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

As contribution to the maintenance of the genofund of the fruit of Yugoslavia, 18 autochthnous varieties of apples have been collected, sorted out and studied in the region of Kosovo and Metohia (Serbia, Yugoslavia). The following biological features had been studied: the blooming time, the ripening time, the size og fruit, the chemical features of the fruit and the yield of the crop. The blooming range of the apple varieties amounted to 23 days (from April 20 to May 13). They all belong to the group of winter varieties. The varieties of the middle sized fruit to big fruit, with a high content of the dry matter and total sugar, and low content of the total acids and mineral elements, are the domineering ones. The varieties which are in the middle as far as the yield of the crop is concerned dominate, and all the studied apple varieties show a distinct alternativity.
