Micronutrient supply of the soils in the region of central Backa [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

A determination of the levels of Cu, Zn, Mn and Co has been done on 348 samples gathered within the framework of a soil fertility control system established in central Backa, Serbia (Yugoslavia). The study has shown that the soils of central Backa, among which chernozem subtypes and varieties, hydromorphic and black meadow soils are the preavailing categories, are well provided with the analyzed elements. Toxic levels have been found only in individual plots. Toxic levels of Cu and Zn were established for 30 ha and 125.02 ha, respectively. These areas are small in respect to the total of 15,826.11 ha analyzed. The results obtained indicate that, from the point of the levels of available trace elements, the region of central Backa is suitable for the production of healthy food. Of course, the established situation does not diminish the necessity of a systematic monitoring of the status of soil fertility and productivity.
