Among the autochthonous alliums thriving in flora of Vojvodina (Serbia, Yugoslavia), the representatives of Sect. Codonoprasum REICHENB like Allium paniculatum, Allium oleraceum, Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum and Allium flavum are ornamental plants of exceptional beauty deserving a mention. These taxa possess multiflorous, loose inflorescences, flowers yellow, pink ti purple-red, and up to 30 cm long bifoliate ornamental spathae. They occur in meadow-steppe communities constituting the class Festuco-Brometea BR.-BL. ex TX. 1943 on chernozem soil. Index values of Allium paniculatum, Allium oleraceum and Allium flavum show that moderately dry, neutral to low acid soils, moderately rich in mineral substances and sunny and warmer habitats favour their growth. In contrast, only Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum possesses typical xerophytic characters, growing on soil extremely poor in mineral substances. As typical steppe species they are permanently threatened so at risk of extinction since natural steppe has been rapidly altering by cultivation. These taxa as natural resources, therefore, deserve our concern since their role in biodiversity conservation, in this country, is out of question. Information obtained by their cultivation and also by analysing their status will ensure their adequate and absolute reintroduction in their natural habitats.
