Hop growing in Yugoslavia - past, present, and future

When conditions for hop production are unfavourable (drought, plant diseases), there is a decrease in the production of hop cones and an increase in the demand for this basic raw material for beer brewing. For years, the Yugoslav acreage in hop has been decreasing, reaching only 584 ha in 1996. This has brought about a decrease in hop production, and the domestic brewing industry has come to depend heavily on imported hop. The decrease of hop acreage has changed the cultivar structure (bitter cultivars have become dominant) and the total production of alpha-acids. In order to overcome the existing problems, certain measures were proposed for the purpose of improving the country's hop production. They include an increase of hop acreage to 1,000 ha by the year 2001 at an annual rate of 80 ha and an increase of the average yield by 0.05 t/ha every year. These measures will rely the most heavily on the new cultivars "Klon-6" and "Klon-23".
