The response of 12 species of Helianthus and 5 interspecific hybrids to artificial infection by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on leaves was studied. This response was compared with the cafeoilquinic derivative (CQ) content of the leaves. The aim of this study was, on one hand, to determine if it is possible to use CQ measurements as a selection criterion for leaf resistance and, on the other hand, to estimate the genetic variability of wild species of sunflower for this criterion. Considerable variability among wild populations was shown for all the characteristics studied. Some species appear to be useful sources for resistance to Sclerotinia leaf attack, in particular to H. strumosus. The only species studied showing a high concentration in 1,5 DCQ was H. resinosus. This characteristic was also observed in the hybrids of this species. However, the absence of any correlation between CQ content and response to fungal infection means that the former cannot be suggested for use in breeding programmes. The possible role of phenolic compounds in the resistance of Helianthus spp. to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is discussed.
