Experimental model of a blast injury of lungs in rats of different strain

Blast injuries are defined as injuries occurring as a consequence of an explosion. One of the basic characteristics of a blast injury are severe, sometimes deadly wounds, primarily in air containing organs (respiratory, digestive tract, auditory system), concurrent with a lack of visible signs of damage. The aim of our study was to obtain an experimental model of a blast injury of lungs in rats of different strain. The experiment included three strains of male rats: Wister, Albino, Oxford (AO) and Dark Augustin (DA). The obtained results indicate a difference in the mortality rate among all three strains after applying a physical force of common intensity of the focused blast wave and distance from the opening of the generator pipe. Dark Augustin strain of rats showed the highest sensitivity. The lethal dose 50 (LD50) was not obtained after 24 hrs. The LD50 for the Wister strain was seen after 24 hrs at a distance of 19.5 cm and 110 kPa waive force. The LD50 for AO strain of rats was recorded after 24 hrs at a distance of 17.5 cm and 110 kPa waive force.
