Twelve bichemical parameters were examined: total protein content, bilirubin, cholesterol, urea, uric acid, triglycerides, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, carotene and the activity of aspartate and alanine aminotraspherase (AST and ALT) in blood serum of lactating cows, cows prior to calving and immediately after calving. In the preceding three-month-period, the farm had a high number of cow mortalities immeditely post parturition. An analysis of the rations of cows revealed that the diet did not meet the needs of specific categories of cows, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Under conditions of the described diet regime and based on the obtained results, the following alterations were determined: hyperbilirubinemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypocalcaemia and hypocarotinemia (in all three groups of cows); hypoproteinaemia, hypocholesterinemia, hypovitaminaemia A and an increased activity of AST (immeditely after calving). The average concentrations of urea in serum of lactating cows and cows prior to calving were lower than values in the physiological range, while hypophosphataemia was detected in lactating cows. The AST activity and the average level of uric acid in serum of cows in all three groups were within the physiological range. The obtained analytical results revealed disorders in the functioning of the liver, described as dystrophic alterations in late pregnancy and puerperium in the observed cattle herd.
