Thinning in young stands of pedunculate oak and narrow-leaved ash in the region of "SG Sremska Mitrovica" [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

Based on the elements of numerical and biological-quantitative structure of sample plots in narrow-leaved ash pure natural stands aged 15 (18) and 31 and in artificially established pedunculate oak stand aged 29, it was concluded that only 15.3 to 22.4 of trees in the dominant layer were of clearly distinguished quality, so this number of trees is a real base for further quality production and priority tending. The principle of selective thinning was aimed primarily at the candidates for future trees. The authors' standpoint is that the delay of selective thinning in the further process of intensive tree grown would lead to a series of unfavourable consequences in the choice of future trees, regarding their quality, and spatial distribution, as well as regarding their development.
