Response of soybean genotypes to Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea

Eleven soybean varieties and lines were studied for response to Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea under condistions of natural infection in the field and inoculation in the green houses. Under the conditions of natural infection in the field, all varieties and lines exhibited a certain degree of susceptibility. However great differemces were detected among the genotypes (Ax). Early maturing genotypes were considerably more susceptible than late ones. The Yugoslav late maturing line 2160/92 was highly resistant in the field conditions. Similar results were obtained with inoculation in the greenhouse. The early maturing genotypes were more susceptible than the late ones. The lowest susceptibility in the greenhouse was exhibited by the line P.9241. Most of its plants showed no disease symptoms. As this line seems to be fully homozygous for resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea, it is possible to select resistant genotypes from it by individual selection. All varieties and lines showed higher susceptibility in the greenhouse than in the field. However, there was a positive correlation (r=0.84) between the susceptibilities to the two infection conditions. The Yugoslav commercial varieties were found to be highly susceptible to the pathogen.
