In the course of the one-year investigations of the river Vlasina and its tributaries Lucnica and Gradska Reka (Serbia, Yugoslavia), water samples were taken in May 1996, for biological and chemical analysis. The sampling was made at five sites of the Vlasina river, and at two sites of each tributary, near their mouth into the main river. Thus, all critical points were considered where under the impack of anthropogenic influences, changes could occur of the physico-chemical characteristics of the water, reflected also in the qualitative and quantitative composition of the biocenoses. The analyses included the phytoplakton, zooplankton, periphyton and benthos, together with the physico-chemical water parameters, used to determine the composition and structure of the communities and identify the bioindicator species. The status of water quality was then evaluated by bioindication.
