In 1998, a three-year series of trials with Liberty Link, a system consisting of genetically modified herbicide tolerant sugar beet variety and the non-selective herbicide Liberty, has been started on 13 locations in all sugar beet growing areas in Germany. The aim of the trials is to work out application recommendations for practice in case of the permission of both indication of Liberty in sugar beets and corresponding genetically modified variety. Within the scope of trials, various application quantities and times of Liberty will be tested on efficacy against weeds, on tolerance of sugar beets towards the herbicide and on sugar yield in comparison with conventional application systems. The trial locations were characterized by different weed potentials and weed species compositions. In 1998, some locations showed already at the beginning of June a relative weed cover of 100/ in the control plot, other ones did not reach a relative weed cover of more than 20/ within the whole vegetation period. During the first trial year, Liberty as well as conventional herbicide treatments were showing a comparable and satisfactory effect on total weed infestation. Compared with conventional herbicide applications, the Liberty Link system showed partly advantages, partly disadvantages on some weed species which have to be investigated more deeply within the following trial years. Due to the considerable location influence, the adjusted sugar yield was without any significant differences in 1998. In 1999 and 2000, the trials will be carried on in order to ensure significant results.
