Seasonal abundance and supervised control of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.) in head cabbage

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella is a serious pest of cruciferous crops in Belgium. The abundance of diamondback moths was measured during 1996 and 1997 in cabbages at three localities of East-Flanders. Action thresholds, based on the average number of adults caught in pheromone traps were evaluated into practice to control larvae of P. xylostella (L). The thresholds were tested on plots of white cabbage cv. Rivera and Bingo, red cabbage cv. Autoro and savoy cabbage cv. Firenzo. Flight activity of the diamondback moth occurred from the end of May to the end of August. Furthermore, peak flight activity of the first and the second generation was observed respectively at the first half of June and at the second half of July. A supervised control of the larvae in the preheading stage at an action threshold of an average of 20 to 40 diamondback moths per trap and in the heading stage at a threshold of 10 moths reduces greatly the number of treatments and ensures high marketable yields.
