Biological fat removal using aerobic and anaerobic activated sludge

Industrial production processes are responsible for the production of millions of tons of fats, oils and greases isolated from the waste waters. Biological biodegradation is an economically and ecologically interesting alternative for the storage and transportation of the fats towards a landfill. During the experiments both aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation are studied. The aerobic reactor configuration consists of an emulsifying compartment and a continuously aerated completely mixed compartment. For the anaerobic degradation a UASB reactor configuration is used. The fats are separated from waste waters of two different food industries. The seeding sludge has not been adapted to the removal of hydrophobic substances. For the aerobic treatment the biodegradation for the two fats amounts to 120 and 150 mg TCEES per gMLSS per day. The effects of emulsifying agents and enzymatic products on the biodegradation are studied. Anaerobic degradation of 80 mgTCEES per gVSS per day has been measured during the adaptation period.
