Monograph of the lithostratigraphy of the Middle and Upper Eocene of the western Belgian Basin
1998
Jacobs, P. (Universiteit Gent (Belgium). Vakgroep Geologie en Bodemkunde)
This overview aims to provide insights into the lithostratigraphy of the Bartonian and the Lower Tongrian, as both units are known since long from outcrops and wells, but also from recently acquired geophysical data offshore the Belgian continental shelf. After the description of the general geological setting of the shallow-marine, siliciclastic sedimentation of the Tertiary and the Paleogene in the intracratonic Belgian Basin, the history of both units is briefly discussed, together with their occurrence on the old geological map, that dates from the turning of the century. The evolution in stratigraphical thinking, together with the extension of lithological data stimulated by the revision of the geological map, necessitated a redefinition of the Bartonian and the Lower Tongrian. The new lithostratigraphical subdivision of the Maldegem and Zelzate Formations is extensively presented, and the sedimentological characteristics and the occurrence of the various units are indicated. Attention is also paid to some excavations where the clay was used as a local resource.
