Lake Naivasha (area: 150 square km) is located in the Eastern Rift of Africa, at the altitude of 1,890 m. It differs mainly from the other lakes of this Rift by its freshwater. The authors present the dynamics of the aquatic vegetation from nine maps (1960-1996). Their comparison indicates a relation between the macrophytes and the water depth. In the last few years, six submerged macrophytes dominated. Each has a defined optimal depth, respectively: 0.50 m for Nitella cf. hyalina; 0.60 m for Potamogeton octandrus: 0.72 m for Chara globularis: 0.77 m for Potamogeton schweinfurthii; 1.20 m for Potamogeton pectinatus; 1.36 m for Najas horrida. On the other hand, no correlation could be established between the distribution of the submerged macrophytes and the sediment type.
