To investigate the influence of seed norms mixed seeding of spring wheat and common vetch the field experiments were carried out in 1994-1997. Field experiments were performed in the experimental field of the Institute of Field Crop Husbandry of Estonian Agricultural University at Eerika. The soil was sandy clay, with a low need for phosphorus and potassium. Field experiments were carried out at two different fertilizer backgrounds: on soil without nitrogen and on soil fertilized with nitrogen fertilizers. Depending on the growing conditions (preceding crop, fertilizing with nitrogen or not) the mixed crops of common vetch and wheat produced 308-435 kilograms of extra protein per hectare as compared to pure wheat. Protein yield was not much influenced by the application of nitrogen in the case of pure vetch and when the proportion of vetch in the seed mixture was large. Starting from the seeding rate of 300 germinating seed per square metre the positive impact of nitrogen fertilizer on the protein yield could be noticed reaching to the maximum value in pure wheat crop. Growing common vetch together with wheat increased the protein content of wheat
