Aspiration of oocytes under rectal control

The aims of the study were to evaluate the efficiency of the aspiration of oocytes by transvaginal puncture of ovaries under rectal control and morphological quality of obtained oocytes, and to determine possible traumatic effects of repeated punctures on the ovaries. Punctures of ovaries were performed once a week in 12 cows and 2 heifers using aspiration device and technique described by Hill (1995). Six cows and the heifers were slaughtered during 3 weeks after the last puncture procedure and their genital tracts and ovaries were subjected to gross examination. In the initial work during 7 weeks in 5 culled cows 17 puncture sessions were performed and in total 51 ova aspirated. The initial results did indicate that oocytes can be obtained using the aspiration device and technique. Experience can be achieved through practice during 5-7 weeks. In the following study a total of 32 puncture procedures were performed in 7 cows and 208 cumulus oocyte complexes and oocytes were collected
