Histopathological chlamydial changes in the brain and spinal cord of animals

We have studied chlamydiosis in animals, its epizootology, pathogenesis and pathological changes. In order to detect chlamydiae in tissues we used the modified Stamp staining method and simultaneously the direct or indirect immunofluorescence method. In Estonia chlamydiae have been found in domestic as well as wild animals. Chlamydiae have been most often and most numerously detected in spinal cord, medulla oblongata and in the white matter of the cerebellum. In the brain there was no gross pathology. Histologically mainly the vacuolation of neuron perikaryons, the gray matter neuropil and white matter were established
