Comparison of winter rye varieties in the field trials at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute

The sucess of cultivation of winter rye depends on the climatic conditions and the adaptation of varieties to variable growing conditions. 1999 was characterised by unfavourable weather conditions during the growing period. The varieties expressed their ability to resist against could damage, snow mould and heavy drought in summer. The highest grain yield had Picasso (6518 kg/ha), succeeded by 'Viku' (5916 kg/ha). The grain yield control varieties 'Vambo', 'Elvi' and 'Tulvi' was 5540 kg/ha, 5630 kg/ha and 5365 kg/ha respectively. Hybrid variety 'Esprit' yielded 5655 kg/ha. Comparatively moderate grain yield was caused by draught during the grain filling stage. The grain yield of population and hybrid varieties had statistically no significant differences. Better resistance to snow mould was expressed by 'Akusti', 'Prima', 'Viku', highest overwintering scores were attained by 'Prima', 'Anna', 'Kaupo', H 15 and 'Tulvi'. The best standing ability was shown by varieties 'Nikita', 'Marder', 'Picasso', 'Esprit' and 'Ursus'
