In dairy cattle breeding the controversy over production vs. health traits seems to reach a new stage, when health traits are becoming increasing important both for profitability and animal welfare reasons. More and more reports reveal the shortcomings of the selection indexes regarding productive herd life. In search for longevity markers conformation, somatic cell count, conglutinin and complement levels, the selection of low and high responder calves are feasible and available methods for selection.
