Thoracic radiography of a 4-year old girl with fever, coughing, and dyspnoea showed signs of an extensive cyst on the left side of the thorax. The fluid obtained by aspiration of the cyst contained typical hydatid sand. The Echinococcus antibody level in serum was 1:128000 in an indirect haemagglutination test and an ELISA. The patient was treated with mebendazole and locally by lavage with hypertonic (10%) sodium chloride solution.
