In the first half of 1998, a mainly intestinal form of goose parvovirus infection was diagnosed for the first time in Hungary; only the classical Asiatic form (with heart and liver lesions) had occured there previously. It first affected geese at 13-15 days of age and started to decline 2 weeks later; mortality was 9-27%; surviving birds were often stunted. There was a severe enteritis, with necrosis of the Lieberkuhn glands and inclusion bodies in the nuclei of the gland cells. Often there was an accompanying necrosis of the oral, tongue and pharyngeal mucosae.
