The effect of pellet urea on the growth and yield of lowlands rice (Oryza sativa L.) IR64 and Bengawan Solo cultivars

The objectives of the study were: 1. to understand the growth and yield response of IR64 and Bengawan Solo cultivars to the rate of pellets urea and 2. to evaluate the nitrogen absorption of the two cultivars at different rate of pellets urea applications. A field experiment was conducted in farmers level at the Pebayuran sub district, Bekasi district, West Java. The soil experiment was alluvial with clay soil texture, low in total soil nitrogen and pH 4.9. A split plot design with four replications was used. The main plot was cultivar which consisted two levels: IR64 (K1) and Bengawan Solo (K2). Sub plot was rate of pellets urea consisting of four levels: none N fertilization (0 kg N/ha), (N0) 56.2 kg N/ha or 2 pellets urea/4 hills, (N1) 84.4 kg N/ha or 3 pellets urea/4 hills, (N2) and 112.5 kg N/ha or 4 pellets/4 hills. The result showed that there was no interaction between the effect of cultivar and rate of pellets urea applications for plant height, number of tiller per hills, root and straw dry weight at harvest, number of spikelets per hill, panicle length, total number of spikelets per panicle, number filled spikelets per panicle, 100 wt of grain, grain yield and straw dry weight per hill while the rate of pellet urea application affect plant height, number of tillers per hill, yield components as well as grain yield. Application of 112.5 kg N/ha or four pellets urea per four hills gave highest grain yield for IR64 and Bengawan Solo cultivars
