English. An experiment was carried out to study the growth and biochemical composition of an alga, Chlorella sp. The alga was grown as a batch culture in a glass fermenters of 5 cm and 20 cm in diameter, and samples for analysis of biomass, chlorophyll, carbohydrate, protein, lipid, and fatty acid were taken in the day 4 (exponential phase) and day (stationary phase). The algal growth rate was 0.81 cell division/day and 0.60 cell division/day in the fermenters of diameter 5 cm and 20 cm, respectively, whereas the biomass concentration was 1.57 g/l and 0.95 g/l organic weight. The proximate composition consisted of carbohydrate 27.00-44.35 percent organic weight. The higher carbohydrate and lipid content was ocurred in the culture of narrower diameter. C 18.1 was the most dominance fatty acid found in the alga, followed by C16.0, C18.2 and alpha C 18:3. An increase in the C18:1 content was observed in the culture of narrow diameter fermenter which was in concomitant with the decrease of C18:2 and alpha C 18:3

Alga tersebut ditumbuhkan secara batch culture dalam kolom tumbuh gelas berdiameter 5 cm dan 20 cm, dan sampel untuk analisa kandungan biomasa, klorofil, karbohidrat, protein, lemak dan asam lemak diambil pada hari ke 4 (fase eksponensial) dan hari ke ll (fase stasioner). Laju tumbuh alga terukur adalah 0,81 pembelahan sel/hari dan 0,61 pembelahan sel/hari berturut-turut pada kolom diameter 5 cm dan 20 cm, sementara konsentrasi biomasa maksimumnya 1,57 g/l dan 0,95 g/l berat organik. Komposisi proksimat alga terdiri dari karbohidrat 27,00-44,35 persen berat organik, dimana konsentrasi karbohidrat dan lemak yang lebih tinggi didapat pada kultur dalam kolom berdiameter lebih kecil. C18:1 merupakan jenis asam lemak yang paling dominan, diikuti oleh C 16:0, C18:2 dan alpha C18:3. Peningkatan konsentrasi C18:1 terjadi pada kolom berdiameter kecil, yang diikuti oleh penurunan konsentrasi C 18:2 dan alpha C18 :3
