Spatial variability of andisol physical properties as slope function under three types of land cover in Central Aceh (Indonesia)

This research aims to investigate lateral and vertical physical properties variability patterns of andisol in Bandar Districts, Central Aceh. The variability investigated is lateral and vertical variability on a slope unit under three types of land cover. Land units were delineated based soil type variability (andisol), slope unit (peak, middle, and foot slope), and land cover types (forest, annual crop, and coffee plantation). The soil physical properties variability laterally was accounted based on variability coefficient. Meanwhile, the physical properties variability distribution vertically was accounted base on analysis descriptive of 4-layer soil physical properties of representative of soil profile. The soil physical properties variability laterally on the slope unit increase from the top to the bottom, except for clay. The soil physical properties variability laterally on the slope profile has the same pattern. The soil physical properties variability laterally decrease under forest to annual crop, and it increase under coffee plantation. Meanwhile, the highest of variability on a slope unit laterally for each slope profile for most of the characteristics investigated was found at the bottom of the slope. The clay fraction decrease from first to second layer, and increase till to fourth layer, meanwhile C-organic increase from first to fourth layer. Therefore, land clearing for annual crop and coffee plantation need on site-suitable technological model planning, especially for slope areas
