Effect of pruning and cycocel application on flower yield of Jasmine

English. Jasmine (Jasminum sambac) is one of ornamental plants and potentially gives a contribution to farmers income. In Central Java, particularly in center production area, generally the flower yield of jasmine is low due to inappropriate cultural techniques. The aim of this research was to study the effect of pruning, cycocel application and both combination on flower yield. This research was carried out at the experiment garden of Research Institute for Ornamental Plant at Pasarminggu, from July 1996 to October 1997. A Factorial Randomized Block Design was used with three replications. The first factor was pruning: four and two months interval; the second factor was application time of cycocel; one and two weeks after pruning; and the third factor was dosage of cycocel: 0; 500; 1.000; 1.500 ppm. The result showed that pruning interval of four months showed significantly higher flower yield than that of two months, where the increased in flower weight and number of flowers were 30.45 percent and 26.6 percent respectively, or 67.55 percent and 57.70 percent to the untreated plants. Cycocel application tends to enhance flower yield of Jasmine. This result can be used to set up a further research on cultural technique to improve plant vigor and flower yield of jasmine

Indonesian. Melati (Jasminum sambac) adalah salah satu jenis tanaman hias yang potensial memberikan kontribusi terhadap pendapatan petani. Produktivitas bunga melati di sentra produksi Jawa Tengah umumnya rendah, karena belum didukung oleh teknologi budidaya yang memadai. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mempelajari pengaruh pemangkasan, aplikasi cycocel dan kombinasinya terhadap hasil bunga. Penelitian dilakukan di kebun percobaan Balai Penelitian Tanaman Hias, Jakarta, dari bulan Juli 1996 sampai Oktober 1997. Rancangan percobaan adalah Acak Kelompok, pola faktorial dengan tiga ulangan. Faktor pertama: pemangkasan 4 bulan dan 2 bulan; faktor kedua: waktu aplikasi cycocel 1 dan 2 minggu setelah pemangkasan dan faktor ketiga adalah taraf cycocel: 0; 500; 1.000; dan 1.500 ppm. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemangkasan empat bulan sekali memberikan hasil bunga lebih tinggi dan berbeda nyata terhadap pemangkasan dua bulan. Kenaikan hasil bunga berturut-turut 30.45 persen pada bobot bunga dan 26.62 persen pada jumlah kuntum bunga atau masing-masing 67.55 persen dan 57.70 persen terhadap kontrol (tanpa perlakuan). Aplikasi cycocel cenderung menurunkan hasil bunga. Implikasi dari hasil penelitian ini dapat digunakan untuk membuat formulasi penelitian lebih lanjut dalam upaya mendapatkan vigor tanaman yang lebih baik dengan produksi bunga melati lebih tinggi dan berkesinambungan
