Observation on length-weight relationship, feeding habit and biological reproduction aspect of napoleon fish, Cheilinus undulatus

The study was conducted to understand characteristics of Cheilinus undulatus prior to future studies of seedling production and its culture through the observation on morphology, gonad maturity and stomach content. Sixty five fishes were collected, of which 54 fish (83.1 percent) was female and 11 fish (16.9 percent) was male. The minimum size was 56 cm in total length (TL) and 3.8 kg in body weight (BW) for female and 90 cm in TL and 11.00 kg in BW for male. The length-weight relationship was found as W=0.02198 L at the power of 2.803. The highest gonad index value was 40.5 for female at the size 86 cm in TL and 12.4 kg BW and 16.8 for male at the size 109 cm in TL and 22,5 kg in BW. Napoleon fish is a carnivore fish as fishes were found as dominant food in the stomach content
Show more [+] Less [-]Indonesian. Pengamatan aspek biologi ikan napoleon dilakukan untuk mengetahui kemungkinan pengembangan usaha pembenihan dan budidayanya di masa mendatang. Pengamatan yang dilakukan meliputi morfologi, kematangan gonad dan isi perut. Dari 65 ekor sampel ikan didapatkan 54 ekor (83,1 persen) betina dan 11 ekor (16,9 persen) jantan. Ukuran minimal kedewasaan pada ikan betina adalah pada panjang total (PT) 56 cm dan bobot tubuh (BT) 3,8 kg, sedangkan pada jantan pada PT 90 cm dan BT 11,0 kg. Hubungan panjang-bobot didapatkan secara eksponensial dengan rumus W=0,2198 pangkat 2,803. Indek gonad tertinggi pada betina 40,5 (diameter oocyt400 mikrometer) pada ukuran PT 86 cm dan BT 12,4 kg, sedangkan pada jantan 16,8 pada ukuran PT 109 cm dan BT 22,5 kg.
