Utilization of oil-palm trees as building and furniture materials (I): Physical and chemical properties, and durability of oil-palm wood

Basic properties of wood from matured oil-palm trees are identified according to the depth and height of samples in the tree stem to know which parts of the stem possible to be used as building and furniture materials. The properties identified are physical properties including moisture content, specific gravity, shrinkage and density of vascular bundles; chemical properties including cellulose, lignin, ashes and silicate contents, and wood solubility; and durability of oil-palm wood. The results shows that almost all properties tested are affected significantly by the depth and the height of samples in the stem, where the influence of depth factor is higher than the height factor. Wood from the most outer part of the stem produces better properties wood than the medium and the center parts, indicates by a lower moisture content and shrinkage values and higher specific gravity and density of vascular bundles values. Similarly, the durability of the most outer part wood is higher than those in the medium and center parts. According to durability classification it is classified into class V. Based on these strength and durability classes, the most outer part of oil-palm stem that reached 30 percent of the stem frond-free volume, can be utilized as materials for certain part of furniture and light building construction
