1999
Eberhards, G. | Saltupe, B. (University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia). Faculty of Geographical and Earth Sciences)
Sea coast monitoring in Latvia was begun in 1987 with the collection of information from the stationary monitoring network along the southern coast of the Riga Gulf (a distance of about 100 km). The present research work was undertaken by the Faculty of Geography at the Latvia University. The research methodology and a monitoring system scheme were developed as well as a stationary monitoring network along all the coastline of Latvia was built. The monitoring system of the sea geological process is described and discussed. The main criteria used to evaluate changes in the coastal zone (erosion, deposition, dynamic equilibrium) are defined and explained. Factors influencing coastal processes have been investigated (sea level, wind direction and speed etc.). The analysis of topographic and cartographic maps, aerial photographs and historical documents allowed to record coastline changes in the course of the last hundred years.
