Field experiments were conducted on cultivated sandy clay loam Lessive Brown soils of the Research and Training Farm "Peterlauki" of Latvia University of Agriculture. The ten local and perspective barley varieties grown in Latvia were included in the experiment under five nitrogen fertilizer treatments. The objective of this study was to test the influence of diverse application techniques of N fertilizer on the yield and quality of barley grain. The research results of three years average indicated that the conventional broadcast of fertilizer N prior to seeding was less effective. Efficiency of fertilizer N applied after seeding was equally effective and somewhat higher with particular varieties compared to local input. The application of extra fertilizer N30 in the tillering significantly raised both the yields of barley grain and protein (C/P) in grains for all the crop varieties.
