1999

Field trials with four potato varieties carried out in the Estonian Institute of Field Crop Husbandry in 1998 are discussed. Before planting potato seed tubers were treated thermally for 48 hours at 30 deg C. During the vegetation period phenological observations were carried out. Plant leaf area was measured and leaf area index was calculated. The yield dynamics of tubers, their starch content and the tuber yield were determined. After harvesting the suitability of tubers for cooking and production of chips was estimated, and the flavour of cooked potatoes evaluated. The results of the trial showed that ware potatoes produced by thermally treated seed tubers were more suitable for food as well as for the production of chips compared with the potatoes produced by non-treated seed tubers.
