The starch grain size structure assesment of potato cultivars bred in Latvia

Starch production from potatoes needs suitable potato cultivars. Most important traits for starch production are high starch content in tubers, starch grains size from 0.030 mm till 0.060 mm and starch grains must be more or less equal. Thirteen potato cultivars bred in Latvia were assessed. Starch content, average size of starch grains, size structure of starch grains and variation coefficients of starch grains size were determined. Starch content depended on number of sunny days and the humidity during the growing period. Starch grains size and size structure were not very stable traits in both years. The most suitable for starch production in every assesment was cultivar "Sarmina".
