Evaluation of early maturity corn hybrids
2000

Very important for high milk production is energy supply. It is possible to ensure energy in our conditions by corn silage prepared from early maturity corn hybrids at grain maturity stages soft dough up to early dent. Hybrids have to reach these stages every year, both when growing conditions are good as well as when they are bad. To evaluate maturity stage and suitability to our climatic conditions for different corn hybrids field experiment was arranged during the years 1994-1998 in the Training and Research Farm "Vecauce" of the Latvia University of Agriculture. Totally 63 corn hybrids were used from different seed companies of USA, Germany and former USSR and from a private breeder from Canada. Very important is cold resistance of corn hybrids, which influences field germination during cool springs. Field germination correlated with the stand density at harvesting from which directly depends the yield of a hybrid. Early maturity hybrids have to silk in late July or early August. The stable early maturity hybrids are nearly all bred by Ph. D.E.Peterson (Canada) and these which got soft dough stage in the cool 1998: Husar, Loft, 3995, Eslia, Hybrid 1, Hybrid 2; good enough were SS-81, SS-83, Trevor, ZLTK-196, 3951. Other hybrids could reach al least soft dough stage only in more suitable (warmer) conditions.
