Economic efficiency of milking equipment used in Latvia has been determined. The criteria of evaluation are as follows: specific consumption of work, labour hours/day per cow, and specific costs, Ls/cow per year. An appropriate computer programme has been developed for calculation of the above mentioned items. In the investigations it has been established that in cow sheds with less than 30 cows it is efficient to use equipment with portable milk pails, with 30 to 50 cows - equipment with milk line installed in the shed and non-automatic milking machines, with 50 to 100 cows - equipment with milk line and automatic milking machines. But if the number of cows is even larger it is useful to introduce loose housing of cows and milking parlours.
