Microscopical diagnostics of otitis externa and the most common bacterial isolates from otic exudate

The main task of the research was to study the microscopical diagnostics of otitis externa. Otitis externa is an important disease of dogs and, to a lesser degree cats. Sometimes it poses a difficult challenge for the veterinarian. The collection and preparation of cytologic samples of otic exudates are very valuable diagnostic method. It is simple to perform, and the information of immediate diagnostic and theurapeutic value can be attained. Evidence of epidermal hyperplasia and increased glandular secretory activity suggests a noninfectious cause. Large numbers of microorganisms and infiltrating leukocytes confirm the presence of infection. The presence of ear mites, particularly O.cynotis, is always significant. Abnormal epirthelial cells that appear singly or in sheets and clusters support the diagnosis of neoplasia; the extent of cell differentiation determines malignancy. Inflammatory cells and acantholytic keratinocytes from vesicular otic lesions suggest autoimmune skin disease.
