[Estrus detection in pelibuey ewes with androgenized ewe or vasectomized ram] | Deteccion de estros en ovejas pelibuey con hembra androgenizada o macho vasectomizado

English. The efficiency of a vasectomized ram versus an androgenized ewe for estrus detection in Pelibuey ewes, was compared. The experiment was carried out for 35 days (June-July of 1996) at the Colegio Superior Agropecuario del Estado de Guerrero. The ewe was androgenized with two intramuscular doses of 250 mg of Testosterone Enanthate given ten days apart. Thirty two adult ewes were subjected to estrus detection every day (from 07:00 to 07:30 hours). The detection was carried out for 15 minutes with the vasectomized male and 15 minutes with the androgenized ewe. The variables evaluated were the percentage of ewes detected in estrus by each animal, the interval between the introduction of the teaser and the detection of first estrus and the interval between each detected estrus. Statistical analysis was carried out by means of the "z" and Student "t" tests. Estrus detection was higher (p0.05) when the androgenized ewe was utilized (97.4 %) in comparison to the vasectomized male (89.5 %). The interval from the introduction of the teaser to the first detected estrus was shorter for the androgenized female than for the vasectomized male (3.5 +- 1.7 vs 4.3 +- 1.5 minutes). The same was true for the interval between detected estruses (3.9 +- 1.8 vs 5.2 +- 2.6 minutes). It was concluded that the androgenized ewe was more efficient than the vasectomized male for estrus detection in Pelibuey sheep

Se comparo la eficiencia para detectar estros en ovejas Pelibuey entre un carnero vasectomizado y una hembra androgenizada, mediante un estudio de 35 dias de duracion (junio-julio de 1996) en el Colegio Superior Agropecuario del Estado de Guerrero. La oveja fue androgenizada mediante la aplicacion intramuscular de dos dosis de 250 mg de Enantato de Testosterona con intervalo de 10 dias entre ellas. Treinta y dos ovejas adultas fueron sometidas diariamente a detecciones de estro (entre las 07:00 y las 07:30 horas) de manera alterna con los dos tipos de animales receladores (los 15 minutos iniciales con el macho vasectomizado y los 15 minutos restantes con la hembra androgenizada). Las variables evaluadas fueron porcentaje de estros detectados, intervalo introduccion del recelador-primer estro detectado (minutos) e intervalo entre estros detectados (minutos). Los datos fueron analizados estadisticamente por pruebas de "z" para proporciones y de "t" de Student. El porcentaje de estros detectados en el rebano fue mayor (p0.05) cuando se utilizo la oveja androgenizada (97.4 %) que cuando la deteccion se hizo con el carnero vasectomizado (89.5 %), con menores intervalos (p0.05) introduccion del recelador-primer estro detectado (3.5 +-1.7 vs 4.3 +- 1.5 minutos) y entre estros detectados (3.9 +- 1.8 vs 5.2 ¬ 2.6 minutos) para la hembra androgenizada en comparacion con el macho vasectomizado, respectivamente.
