Vegetative propagation of selected mangrove species by cuttings
1998
Anon. (Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau, College, Laguna (Philippines))
With the use of Hormex solution with 2,400 ppm. Napthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) stem and branch cuttings of api-api, bungalon, pagatpat, busain, bakawan babae, bakawan lalake, bakawan bato, kulasi, saging-saging, tangal and malatangal were induced to produce roots. Among the 11 species, only api-api, bungalon and saging-saging grew but a few roots. Even with varying concentrations (1,000; 2,000; and 3,000 ppm) of NAA, the stem and branch cuttings of the other species tested did not develop roots. During hardening, most of the rooted cuttings died and the field performance of outplanted bungalon was poor. Findings of the study would help provide insights in future tree improvement programs. More studies on the efficacy of other growth regulators, considering the time of application and various environmental factors, would surely help in coming up with a technology that would answer the problem on planting materials for use in reforestation of the country's denuded coastal areas
