Nutrients and heavy metals of plankton in mussel growing areas: Panguil Bay, Lanao del Norte and Binoni Lagoon, Camiguin Province [Philippines]

The amount of cadmium, cobalt and mercury in the plankton samples were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. Cadmium level from the three sampling sites ranged from 1.45 to 3.90 mg/kg. Mercury was not detected from the Camiguin samples while the Baroy and Darumawang samples showed a very low level of presence. The highest and lowest amount of cobalt detected were from the Camiguin sample ranging 4.35 mg/kg to 18.13 mg/kg. The chromium content was determined using UV [ultraviolet]-visible spectophotometric analysis with dipheryl carbazide. All samples from the three sites during the three sampling periods were below the detection limit. The analysis of copper and zinc was done by voltametric stripping with a hanging mercury electrode using standard addition technique. The average copper content observed ranged from 7.75-45.88 mg/kg and 34.63-133.69 mg/kg for zinc. The calcium level in the plankton samples from Camiguin was higher than the Baroy and Darumawang samples during the three sampling periods. Calcium content was determined by EDTA titration using hydroxynapthol indicator. The magnesium concentration in plankton was determined by spectrofluorometric chelation method with 8-hydroxyquinoline. The average magnesium content observed from the three sites ranges from 8,269.61 to 183,158.67 mg/kg
